There are a wide variety of 3D formats used to distribute 3D content, including side-by-side, top-bottom, H.264 MVC, etc. To further complicate matters, each may use a variety of techniques to implement the 3D format, such as vertical, horizontal, or quincunx up/down sampling. Since set-top boxes and Blu-ray players now need to support playback of content from a wide variety of sources, including over-the-top (OTT), they need to be able to handle all these 3D formats. In addition, support for both legacy and new 3DTVs must be considered.
